Marius had been purposely avoiding Grantaire the moment he discovered that he too had been assigned to District 3.
It was not because he disliked Grantaire; he did not know enough about his fellow Frenchman to warrant outright dislike. It was, rather, due to his uncertainty and uneasiness. It was difficult enough to engage in conversation with Enjolras, or Joly, or Combeferre. Even moreso with Eponine, in which everything he said managed only to deepen the rift between them. So if he did not know what to say, if he was incapable of saying anything that could benefit the both of them, it was best not to speak at all.
But his mind wandered often, as was usually the case with dreamers. His was in the clouds now, with Cosette, in a world without fear and suffering and the many abuses of the Capitol. In a world where she was still full of life and love and his. He did not even notice Grantaire until he walked right into him, stumbling in the process and needing to grab onto the other man's sleeve to keep himself steady.
His eyes widened when he realized whom it was that he had collided into. "Ah." He paused, briefly. "I had not expected to meet you."
