"Then the proper thing to do would be to ask," Sam replies, in the lecturing tone he might use for a young Hobbit recently caught pilfering in the orchard. He feels awfully small, still on the floor, and so he picks himself up - it doesn't put them eye-to-eye, but it makes him feel a bit more authoritative, anyhow.
