Cole is going to have many chances to practice patience with Gary, who not only continues to miss the point, but seems to act in continued and flagrant disregard for it. He waves his hand and lets out a dismissive puff of air.

"Nah," Gary insists. "They'll come back! They're just cats. Cats are dumb. They'll forget about the whole thing in like five minutes." Cats, goldfish--they work about the same, don't they? "Come on, look on the bright side! I saved you from wasting all that bread."

He thinks about that for a moment.

"...You gonna eat that?"
