Steve doesn't at first take notice of the little hobbit when he appears at the table, but it doesn't take long for Steve to spot him. It's probably the first time Steve really realizes how huge everything seems in comparison to a hobbit. Not really something that stuck in his mind until he could see it.
At least Steve knows enough to assume Frodo means Man as in humans, not the gender.
