Close your eyes [Closed]

Who| Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers
What| The effects of the curfew catch up on Bucky and he falls asleep on Steve. That's it, that's the log.
Where| D9 common area
When| sometime this week
Warnings/Notes| Sleepy super-soldiers hella gay

Bucky might be a super-soldier assassin, though one without his enhancements right now, and he might pretend he doesn't need to sleep and that avoiding it won't catch up with him but that's all it is, pretending. With the recent curfew making matters worse at night it's only a matter of time before his body betrays him and makes him sleep whether he wants to or not.

With the breakthroughs he and Steve have had in the last arena he's presently sitting quite close to his friend on the couch in the D9 suite, while Steve sketches quietly beside him. The tv is playing some ridiculous Capitol show and Bucky is blinking slowly, not really hearing or seeing anything on the screen in front of them. It's more important to focus on how close Steve is and how the gentle sound of pencil on paper is quietly soothing, carrying him back to lazy summer afternoons that belong in another life.

He feels relaxed, for once, his mind drifting pleasantly along to the background noises of the suite and Steve, so Bucky barely notices when he starts to lean over and his shoulder presses against Steve's.

Steve is mostly just ignoring whatever is on, focusing on the art he's doing and the man beside him. It's a peaceful moment, something they don't have a lot of these days. Not with the arenas around the corner and other moments of chaos that swirls around them like a whirlpool. Not with the curfew that causes both stress and concern, especially as he sees how exhausted Bucky has become. How little the man sleeps now that they're separated.

It seems more often than not they can't catch a break and Bucky needs a break. Steve needs a break, but that's not something he'll admit.

He hesitates for a small second when his friend's shoulder presses up against his own, turning his head to look at the other man, to see what's the matter. But all he's met with is a man who's losing a fight against his own body's need to sleep.

"Catch a nap, I'll keep watch."

"Mmhm, say that to those heavy eyelids," Steve hums an amused sound, something that vibrates in his chest to show just how much of a laugh it was.

Laughter has been a quiet thing for Steve for a long time now, so many years of having to hold back for his asthma and other conditions just never let him have much of the deep belly laughter in his life. At least it's never bothered him he can't.

"Give it five minutes and you'll be out like a light." He shifts his arm, just a little, so Bucky can be more comfortable. It restricts Steve's own movements, but drawing with one hand is simple enough.

If there was something to bet, Steve would, because he knows full well who's going to win this one. Bucky had no chance of staying up much longer. He's seen the man fade off like this too many times back in the day to not know it when he sees it.

This was all familiar in a painful way. But it was a good pain.

"Sure does show what I know. You can't fight it forever," Steve gives another breathy laugh before he starts to doodle a picture of Bucky sleeping on the corner of the page. Just a small cartoon of the other man, mouth open in a snore, a puddle of drool, loose limbed. He might be exaggerating a little.

Only a little.

"Like I said, five minutes."

Steve feels the breath catch in his chest, his pencil stilling in his grasp, the words resting against him like a brick. It's always such a relief to hear Bucky utter anything so familiar, even if he might not remember the exact context. It makes him happy, but it also makes him ache to know the pain remembering will cause his friend over time.

Sometimes, he wonders if it's a kindness or cruelty to help the man remember.

But he doesn't let his mind dwell, instead finding air of his lungs and his pencil scratching against paper again.

"Jerk."

"Maybe you should take the hint then," but it's soft, he doesn't have as much of the usual jib in it.

No, Steve is just glad Bucky's slipping off into sleep, that he's fading away as the minutes and seconds tick by. Over the last few months, he knows how little the man sleeps, he knows how he can only let go for periods of time, Steve often offers to stand guard, let the man sleep in relative security, but it's nice to have this moment between the two of them.

For it to happen more naturally.

It's been so long since anyone has called him Stevie, that he goes still. Yet, even as he turns his head just enough to look at the other man yet not disturb him, he can see how he's nearly gone from this world and knows it wasn't intentional. A slip of the memory perhaps, something Bucky might not even remember if Steve were to wake him up and ask him about it right now.

No, Steve will let him sleep, let it pass unquestioned, and gladly settle in to being Bucky's pillow for the next few hours.
