It wasn't that she didn't think it couldn't work. It probably could in the short term. But if she wanted to elude final death long enough to find some way to bring this place down--and she very much did--she'd have to play the game well enough they'd want to keep her in it, not give them a very good reason to forget about her.

"If we were anywhere but where we are, you'd probably think I was crazy to tell you this," she says. "But... I was in another world. A different one from the world of New York. A different one from here I'd been drawn there."
