Barbara's smile in return seems almost confused, her own face mostly visible behind a domino mask with an ostentatious silver filigree of wheat curling around one eye, thrusting into the air above her head. If it weren't anchored in part to her ear, and the domino glued in place, Barbara suspected the whole thing would have fallen off ages ago.
