Kevin's Crowning

Who | Everyone.
What | Kevin's Crowning
Where | An outdoor plaza, sectioned off and well guarded.
When | Starting at noon and continuing on until sunset.
Warnings/Notes | This event is mandatory for all Tributes and Victors to attend. Even if you do not tag in, your character will attend this party.

Playful signs began to pop-up all over the Tribute center in the days leading up to the crowning, advertising the mandatory nature of the event itself while also promising an afternoon of delightful festivities. All attendees were loaded onto buses and driven to the location of the picnic, with colorful t-shirts distributed upon their arrival (D1- Navy, D2- Red, D3- Grey, D4- Light blue, D5- Orange, D6- Yellow, D7- Forest green, D8- Royal blue, D9- Purple, D10- Black, D11- Lime green, D12- Hot pink, and White for any Capitol officials in attendance.) Likewise, all the attendees were given name tag stickers and then dispersed out into the plaza. All except guest of honor, Kevin, who was escorted onto the grounds dressed entirely in white and was given a large and ornate golden crown to wear.

Balloons of every color decorated the entire area . Along with picnic tables and benches, a large main stage was erected in the middle of the plaza with a microphone and a DJ, who played the same six songs on repeat. At it's center, Kevin was given a throne to sit on, so that he could preside over the picnic and enjoy his freshly prepared hamburger and french fries.

There were several small tents that ringed the edge of the stage area. Inside a few of them, you might face painters available, but the only design they would do was paint your face to look like Kevin. Anyone who had their face painted was also given an adorable construction paper crown to wear.

In other tents, a few carnival games had been set up for entertainment. There was a shooting range game where the faces of the targets changed to look like you whenever you stepped up to play, as well as skeeball and a rope ladder climb game. All the prizes were stuffed plush dolls reminiscent of famed former victors. All with Kevin's smile.

A bouncy castle that looked a shocking bit like the city hall building found in the last arena was free for anyone to play on. (Complete with fog machine!) And almost directly across the way from the castle, a caged-in area set up to be a ball-pit was also open for all to enjoy. Upon further inspection of the pit filled with thousands of plastic balls, one could clearly see how they had each been painted to look like giant, vacant black eyes.

The only two food options available to attendees were cupcakes and hotdogs. The cupcakes came with sprinkles. The hotdogs also came with sprinkles. The only beverage option was orange juice. And everyone must have a glass of orange juice, otherwise no one can ever leave.

At 2pm, Peacekeepers erected a volleyball net and the Tributes were instructed to play. Anyone who touched the net would get a slight electrical shock. Clearly it was a best to avoid the net.

As the volleyball game came to a close, several officials took the stage with a special announcement. Public polls would be open to all Capitol citizens the following morning to begin casting their votes. Who will be the next tributes to go into the next arena?! Over the next few days, the public will pick their favorites to enter a special bonus arena! Stay tuned for details!

Once the festivities were over and the Tributes were loaded back onto the buses, they would come to notice something new in the lobby of the Tribute Center. On the ceiling above them was a massive crystal chandelier, seven feet across. And it was no ordinary chandelier. It was customized beautifully, in the shape of Kevin's jagged and ever-present smile.

Beneath it, a spread of fine wine and cheeses. A man in a cream yellow suit with cream yellow hair sat at a grand piano in the corner, playing calm and pleasant melodies that might seem almost familiar to some and yet unrecognizable to anyone. Escorts seem to be in no hurry to get tributes back to their towers, and the wine continues to flow late into the night for anyone who lingers around to drink it.

Until next time, tributes. Until next time.

Mingling isn't something Steve really does well, he's more of a one on one person when it came to socializing. So, he finds himself off to the side, eating on some cheese as he watches people do what he's choosing not to. People watching has always been something he's found interesting.

He turns his attention to the man approaching him though, giving him a small friendly smile and a nod in greeting. "Having a good time?"

"Not as good a time as Kevin," quips Stephen, with a bit of a sideways smile. "I'm not sure any of us are as happy with this Crowning as he is." The words are careful: Stephen isn't admitting that he intensely dislikes this party, instead couching his disapproval in a compliment and another sip of wine.

The wording catches Steve, just enough to make him wonder if it was a backhanded compliment or an actual one. He doesn't know the man well enough to be able to tell just yet where that was going.

"I don't think anyone is having a good of a time as he is," it's testing the waters, but the words are still wry. "The Victor is unique, I'll give him that."

"Tell me about it." Stephen blows out a slow breath. "Working with him has been...challenging, in ways I've never seen before," he says diplomatically. "It's almost a relief, seeing him out of the Arena. Then again, it means I'll have to keep an eye on him full-time."

"Good luck with that, I don't envy you." While he's a little amused at what the man is saying, he also can't help giving him a sympathetic smile. That can't be fun at all.

"So, you work with the tributes? A stylist?" There's something refined and not hardened about him that makes Steve feel safe to assume he's not a former victor. He couldn't even imagine this man in the arena.

The eyeliner is light today, very natural-looking, to go with the subdued nature of the crowning's mandatory attire, but it is still perfectly coordinated with the five or so glittering gemstone studs that dot Stephen's ears. No, this is a man who has never set foot in the Arena in his life.

"An Escort, actually," he replies, giving Steve a smile that was friendly enough, if a little on the polite side, and offering a hand to shake. "Stephen Reagan. It's a pleasure, Captain Rogers."

If he wasn't so used to it in his own world, being called by his title and name without introduction would make him uncomfortable, but he is used to it. Though it's a little odd here, not many people call him Captain around here.

"Pleasure is mine, Mr. Reagan," Steve takes his hand and shakes it, a firm handshake, but he keeps his strength tempered back to not hurt the other man. "Mind me asking what made you choose this career?" He's always been curious why people choose to work with the tributes - people who are just going to die and possibly never come back.

A look of surprise flashes across Stephen's face, then one of interest: it isn't often he's asked these questions by Tributes. None of them ever seem to want to know.

"I don't know how much you know about Capitol politics," Stephen says, "but the Reagan family has been deeply involved in Capitol operations for over seventy-five years. Roughly half of us fall into politics proper, but the other half prefers more social occupations. So, as the lynchpin of--" Here he falters, for just a moment: this is a spiel he has given countless times in interviews, but this is the first time he has said this fully conscious of what a lie it is. "--of our society, a career in the Hunger Games was a natural choice for me." His smile is forced there for a moment, but relaxes as he goes on. "I've also met the most incredible people."

Steve listens with interest, his brow furrowing a little at the forced smile. Yeah, he gets that the games are a big part of this society and this is a guy who sounds like he's raised near the epicenter of it all, so he can't blame the view of it being a lynchpin or it being a natural choice. It seems a little fake to him though.

When Stephen relaxes though, Steve's brow unfurrows again as he looks around the room.

"I can imagine, I've met some incredible people here myself," Steve thinks of so many people he's met, feels that, in the short time of knowing them, his life has been enriched for it. The only benefit of this.

A nod. "It's broadened my worldview," Stephen goes on, casually. "Growing up in the Capitol is like living in a very small, very insulated bubble. There are only so many ideas going around, only a small number of thoughts being passed back and forth between citizens. Even though it has its challenges, working with Tributes has been a breath of fresh air."

He knows he's skirting the edge of dangerous territory. The words are innocuous enough, but if Cyrus Reagan were to get his hands on the tapes, he might worry. However, Stephen also knows that war is coming, war the Capitol is practically set up to lose, and that if he wants to get on the side he wants to be on, he's got to make his political position clear. And soon.

Besides. This is Captain America. Stephen knows enough about Steve Rogers to be fairly confident that he won't run to the Peacekeepers.

Stephen's risk to trust Steve is well placed. Going to the Peacekeepers would be the last thing the man would do, especially when the words seem to point at the man being more an ally in this fight. It's a fight that will definitely need as many allies as possible.

"Even growing up in a huge and very eclectic city, I still learned just how small my world was when I left, met people from all walks of life, so I'm glad to hear that, better to enjoy it than them drive you crazy and wind up hating your job," he treats the subject lightly in tone but his face doesn't portray that as well. He's trying to make Stephen's comments seem casual, common, nothing to be concerned over.
capitolprivilege: (and everything is fine)

[personal profile] capitolprivilege 2014-08-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"It does make your world feel small, doesn't it?" Stephen gestures around at the other Tributes with his wineglass. He sees Steve's expression; Stephen is confident in his guess that Steve's got it. He's not going to discuss it further, then. He relaxes, his smile getting easier, his breaths coming slower. "But I could never hate this job. I hate being away from it, actually."

Even taking into consideration all the trouble he'd gone through over the past few months, that two-year hiatus his brother had strongarmed him into taking had been worse.

Steve looks around when he gestures and maybe in some ways it does, but recently he'd learned about other worlds and races and beyond in his own universe. Maybe that being such a new discovery makes this less startling. The universe is vast, he's surprised he ever thought it could be limited.

The next comment though really catches Steve, his attention fully on the other man again. That's one thing with Steve, he might not respond to everything, but he always actively listened to everything.

"Is being involved in the Tributes final days that meaningful for you?" It's not said maliciously or even rude, just an honest wondering, like it's something he wants to understand not judge. There's even a hint of concern as he continues, "Can't be easy watching them go through this."
capitolprivilege: (every single moment)

[personal profile] capitolprivilege 2014-09-10 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Stephen hesitates. No, it isn't easy. It's very hard, actually. It always has been. But he doesn't want to admit it, not yet.

"My job can mean life or death for nearly ten people. It's difficult to hand that kind of responsibility over to someone else."

Even if District 6 hadn't seen a Victor for years before Kevin. Stephen was good at his job, but 6 wasn't a district with skills that translated well to the Hunger Games.
