WHO| EVERYONE
WHAT| Effie is throwing a small scale party for just the tributes.
WHERE| The District 12 suite.
WHEN| Christmas
WARNINGS/NOTES| Secret Santa's are under the cut. Feel free to tag in whether you signed up for secret santa or not.

Effie had tried very hard to make this a party that was actually made for the tributes, not made to show them off.

She had tried very, very hard.

The food was what she had been able to investigate as “home” cooking for those she could track down, an odd arrangement of food that sometimes got close to the tributes home food, and sometimes was a terrible disaster. Blood pudding, for example, was a dish best avoided. But then it usually was.

The best hits reel had been her idea. It took a tense conversation with Haymitch and about 45 minutes to convince her that now, that wasn’t really what any Tribute wanted to see when they were trying to relax.

After that the party was much nicer, mellow music, holiday cheer and, for a holiday party, fairly low key. Lorne had karoke going in one room, while another had a large glittering Christmas tree and mellow music playing, with the District 12 windows wide open to show the snow covered city underneath.

Well, here's one person whose attention is on Bruce. Though not for the reasons Bruce is probably thinking. Actually, Don was looking for something to drink and Bruce...just happened to be standing where they were.

"Um...excuse me." Oh dear. A newcomer. Don smiled, hoping his presence wouldn't cause him to react badly. "Just getting some water."

The refreshments table had a long and grand tradition as a place for people to awkwardly lurk around at parties, and Bruce would respect and honor that tradition.

"Yeah, sorry," he said, shuffling over instinctively with an awkward apologetic smile, and then actually bothered to glance at who he was speaking to.

Huh. Well, that's interesting.

In his defense, it was more curiosity than anything else in his expression, though he still tried to cover it up. So some people-- or aliens? he should check on the correct terminology-- got to keep their conditions. He's fine with keeping it at just one of them.

"So, uh, how rude a question is it to ask...?" he trailed off, because while he's always a fan of addressing the elephant in the room, that didn't mean he knew how to go about it.

"It's all right. I get it all the time." It's always good to address the turtle in the room. Ha ha. Get it?...haaaaa. "I'm really a mutant turtle that can talk. Ah... name's Donatello."

He paused for a second to take that in.

"Huh. Well, that'd explain it. So, what's the story, some sort of science experiment?" It always did seem to be the science experiments.

"Uh, Bruce," he added, nodding briefly-- he would shake his hand, and moved to do so, before hesitating slightly and deciding better of it, turning the motion into a grab for a drink of his own. "Nice name."

He had no idea whether his name would be recognized; maybe he should come up with a famous name of his own to go by.

"Car accident and alien waste, actually." He shares an origin story with a lawyer Bruce might have heard of named Matt Murdock. Sort of. Its...complicated and potentially litigious. "Nice to meet you, Bruce. And...thank you. My sensei named me after the Renaissance painter."
hasacondition: (so... yeah)

[personal profile] hasacondition 2012-12-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"That'd do it, I guess," he said, as if it was a joke-- but in all fairness, he's seen some really weird stuff, and some of that was caused by just his own blood, so.

"Yeah, likewise, uh. Circumstances aside." Unless they were supposed to pretend they weren't kidnapped? Or maybe they weren't all in the same boat.

"Yeah...definitely circumstances aside."

Don is quiet for a moment after that. He wasn't sure what this guy did or didn't know, so he approached it as gently as he could, lowering his voice.

"Has...anyone told you why you're here?"
hasacondition: (things that make me angry?)

[personal profile] hasacondition 2012-12-30 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He leaned forward slightly, intrigued. So here was an acknowledgement of the need to keep things quiet-- and an opportunity to maybe get some answers, too. It'd be too lucky if this guy... turtle... thing could give him information on why he, specifically, was here, but any little bit could help.

"There was something about staying alive?" But who knew if that was just a warning not to act stupid, or if it meant they'd just shoot him in the head if he wasn't useful enough to whatever cause they were collecting for.

Do you mind Don spilling the beans about the coming back to life thing

[personal profile] polyturtle 2012-12-30 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"...Tip of the iceberg." Don folded his arms. "You know how in ancient Rome they had the gladiator games? Well...in this world - Panem, it's...the future, I think - they call them the Hunger Games. And we're the gladiators."

hasacondition: (after a while it just gets redundant)

no problem, go right ahead!

[personal profile] hasacondition 2012-12-30 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He paused to take this in, glancing down at the floor as he processed the easiest stuff first. So, Panem, possibly the future-- unless Tony crashed his car into the arctic and he had partial memory loss, there had to be a lot of power involved (if it was true, always had to keep that in mind)-- and what would be a really great explanation for why they took him, if not for the problem where he can't feel the other guy.

He looked back up, eager to get as much info as he can right now, even if it's not true. "So... so, what, we're getting tossed into death matches?"
polyturtle: (oh...oh dear...)

=D

[personal profile] polyturtle 2012-12-30 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Basically." Don rubbed his head. "And it doesn't end after you die, either. They have the ability to bring you back for the next Arena if you lose. You keep going back and playing for the audience until you win. Or until you run afoul of the government. Then they just...kill you and don't bring you back."
hasacondition: (just off the top of my head I'd say....)

Re: =D

[personal profile] hasacondition 2012-12-30 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That made him stop, staring at Don much more seriously. "So it's not just that we're killing each other for their amusement, but they're going to play God while at it?"

He was expecting the familiar surge of rage threatening to transform him, and yet there was nothing. One more way they were messing around, then.

But there was good information here, too-- definitely stay off their bad sides.

"Ah...yeah." Frown. "Unfortunately."
hasacondition: (of course those are useless in Mayfield)

oof, sorry for the delay! I've been traveling

[personal profile] hasacondition 2013-01-05 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He took a moment, head down, pinching the bridge of his nose, to fully digest this. Ever the scientist, though, this all raised some really important questions.

"How can they even... we die, for sure? Not just bringing us near death? They have to have something-- reanimating the molecules, maybe, but that shouldn't..."

He trailed off as he realized what he was doing. "...Sorry, you, uh, don't have to answer all those."

He smiled apologetically, a trace of humor back in it. "...Unless that's common knowledge, I mean, in which case, definitely answer."
